Dual Pixel 3D from Canon – is this another step to bringing back 3D to the mainstream audience ? Canon have announced software which uses the functionality in their main SLR range to create 3D images and videos from RAW files generated by the cameras. See the press release here.

The beauty of this announcement from Canon is that it brings 3D options but with the mainstream photographic equipment that everyone can use. You have the option to create great quality 3D images but without forcing the choice.
The underlying Dual Pixel 3D technology is actually great for photography more widely bringing higher quality auto focus across the whole frame particularly for live shots or videos. There is a summary on Wikipedia here. In development since 2013 when it started with the Canon EOS 70D DSLR, the quality and coverage has been extended with later versions of the cameras, but also the capacity to use this for 3D images and videos has been identified. Importantly only certain cameras with Dual Pixel technology and specific lenses are good enough for this and it is worth check the compatible cameras. Summary below.
So anyone using these cameras can take great photos and videos, however those who use the new software Dual Pixel 3D (DP3D) can also create 3D. This software is currently downloadable from the USA and Singapore Canon sites (but not in the UK yet!). The examples that you can see on the Canon USA website look very impressive, particularly if you like taking shots of food or flowers. The video is interesting because it gives pretty specific suggestions on how to get the best shots. We can see this being used in many food outlets very soon, for example to give their food range a more impressive display.
